The Quantum and the Self

In Mysterium Coniunctionis, Jung stresses that the lines of investigation developed by depth psychology and quantum physics yield concepts which display remarkable analogies.  If they continue to converge, the unity of psyche and matter would gain in probability.  In this lecture, we will show how important the concept of the quantum was to Jung toward the end of his life and how it informed his understanding of the concept of the self.  We will also describe some of the most salient features of the concept of the quantum in modern research, illustrating them with personal dreams and drawing the analogies with depth psychology which impressed Jung so much. 

 

Christophe Le Mouël, PhD, is a quantum physicist who did research for several years in France and in Greece.  He also worked for the National Center for Nuclear Energy in Paris, France.  He moved to the United States in 2007 and is currently the executive director of the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles.  He has lectured on the connection of depth psychology and physics in Europe and in the United States, more recently for the training program of the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles.  His series of articles "Four: A Reflection on the Wholeness of Nature" has been published in the journal Psychological Perspectives.
